  abstract = {<p>Health information systems (HIS) training is an integral part of HIS implementation and is a mammoth task requiring huge investments of money, other resources and sound pedagogy. Distance learning, utilizing online learning, is an alternative. However, given the enormity of the task, low resource nature of the settings and the complex nature of health care staff training, inequities could emerge, that could hamper the training and limit its ability to achieve the expected outcomes. This paper suggests a rights-based approach to resolve the issue of inequity in such training instances and utilizes the 4As (Availability, Access, Acceptability and Adaptability) framework to evaluate three instances of HIS training in developing countries which made use of online learning. The paper discusses the recognition of inequities and remedies to achieve social justice in future HIS training through a rights-based approach. The paper concludes by suggesting the same as a new approach to health professional training with a focus on social justice.</p>
