Chagas disease caused by the protozoa Trypanosoma cruzi is a major emerging parasitic infection in Europe fueled by the increasing transnational mobility. While 100′000 persons are estimated to be infected, 90% remain undetected due to difficulties in accessing health services and the dearth of specific programs. Early identification and treatment allow to reduce blood-borne or vertical transmission and cure most infected newborns and infants. Addressing the social, cultural and economic factors in which Chagas disease is embedded is a key factor for its successful management in Europe.
