Overview: 2015 marks the end of the Millennium Development Goal period, and while the global target for drinking-water was met five years ahead of schedule, the target for sanitation was missed by nearly 700 million people.

Section A of the report presents updates for 2015 on the status and trends in access for drinking-water and sanitation for countries, regions, and the world, including final assessments for the MDG targets. Section B provides a retrospective on the evolution of global monitoring of water, sanitation and hygiene since 1990, the baseline year for the MDGs. This section highlights new approaches to monitoring aspects of water and sanitation access that go well beyond household access to facilities, which should inform monitoring of new post-2015 targets.
