This chapter explores the complex and bidirectional relationship between functional limitations and mental health. Functional limitations, defined as restrictions in performing basic physical and mental actions, can profoundly impact an individual’s emotional, psychological, and social well-being. Conversely, mental health problems can exacerbate the challenges associated with functional limitations. This chapter examines the physical, emotional, and mental aspects of functional limitations and highlights the importance of mental health in various contexts, including education, work, and healthcare. Multiple factors contribute to mental health, including social determinants like education and social support, economic factors such as poverty and work stress, environmental factors like building design and neighborhood relationships, and individual factors such as personality and comorbidities. Addressing the entanglement of functional limitations and mental health requires a multi-sectoral approach engaging stakeholders from healthcare, social services, education, and community organizations. This chapter discusses challenges and strategies at the individual, family, societal, and health system levels. Individual strategies include seeking help, engaging with support services, and advocating for access to care. Family interventions involve providing caregiver support and family-centered care models. Societal strategies include promoting awareness, implementing inclusive policies, and developing targeted programs. At the health system and government level, promoting integrated physical and mental healthcare, investing in research, and supporting disability rights are key. Various support measures and interventions are explored, such as integrating experts from different fields, developing personalized care plans, building support networks, leveraging assistive technologies, providing information and training, and encouraging community participation.
