Systematic review: skin and wound management interventions related to skin-neglected tropical diseases.

Abstract

The predominant data on self-care management suggest that patients and affected persons should become the leading caregiver. Personal support and self-management by individuals affected by skin NTDs and their families should be promoted. In addition, the need for a cultural understanding in addressing skin and wound management interventions for the NTDs included highlights the importance of combining and integrating services and activities to deliver such interventions. However, the quality of the data is disputable as only three of the studies adopted a randomised controlled trial design guaranteeing quality of data. Future research should focus on outlining and implementing community-based strategies to overcome stigma, and on demonstrating the effectiveness of the proposed measures.
